going green anyone?

Just wanted to share with everyone out there what we have been doing in our home to decrease our impact on the environment.  When we first moved to NOLA Chad and I both bought bikes. We have been so happy to be able to ride our bikes to and from the many businesses we frequent in our neighborhood. This is also Chad's primary transportation to and from school and he is loving it. After both having extensive commutes the last 2 years we are glad to have sold one car and picked up our awesome cruisers.

We have also begun composting. Of course this may sound a bit daunting for the beginner, but there's really nothing to it. I keep a small plastic trash can by the chopping block and after preparing food put scraps into it. At the end of the day I take the scraps out to a large trash receptacle we have on the side of the house that we share with our neighbor. I have turned the rubbish once, added a bit of cut greens from landscaping and come spring we will hopefully have some nice gardening compost.

We also use our local recycling company. New Orleans is one of the few metropolitan areas that probably charges for this service, but we also split this with the neighbors so it's not too bad. Of course they only come every other monday, so if I forget one week it starts really piling up. I keep the recyclables under the sink in a paper bag until time to set out.

With all the composting and recycling I have really noticed a difference in the amount of trash we are putting out each week. All of our trash has to go somewhere, so I'm glad I ca at least do a small part to decrease the land that has to be used to process all of that junk.
